Job Descriptions
A successful swim meet takes many parents volunteers. In fact, it takes over 50 parents to time, officiate and score a typical swim meet along with setup, snack bar help and cleaning up afterwards.When you register online, parents will be prompted to sign up to help on the days that are convenient for you.We ask that if your child is swimming that you are involved with the meet in some way.Please do not be intimidated by signing up initially. Most jobs do not require any previous experience or training. Volunteer official positions require some training but that training is offered through the swim league for those interested.
Training Definitions
*(HT) HOST TRAINED: The team volunteer coordinator will briefly explain the position to new parents. This can be done before their shift or at the swim practice. These positions are open to everyone and will require 10 min. orientation.
*(RT) RMSL TRAINED: These positions require the parents to attend a Rocky Mountain Swim League Training Session prior to season start. They are not difficult and open to everyone who is interested. These positions are crucial for the team. No meet can be held without trained officials!
Breakfast Pick-up
Pick up breakfast items as needed home meet. Reports to Concession Manager the morning of the swim meet.
Friday Night Concession Prep
Help set up and prep for concessions the next morning down at the pool. Bring a sharp knife or items may be prepared at home. Will work with Concessions Manager to coordinate getting supplies.
Grill Master
Prepares the grill and cooks burgers and hot dogs during the meet. First person starts the grill, the last cook cleans it.
Heating
*(HT) Monitor the progress in heating and gather swimmers for the next event to be organized on the bench. Organize the swimmers and confirm they are in the right order for all events. Deliver swimmers to to the pool deck. This job requires frequent walking and standing. This is a great way to learn the swimmers! If you are someone who is comfortable supervising and organizing a group of young people in the midst of chaos this is the job for you.
Sell Concessions
If you like people, selling stuff, taking cash and making change this is the job for you! Also, you get to stand in the shade at the meet which is an added bonus. Volunteers work shifts between 7:30 am - 12:30 pm during swim meets. The first arrives early to help set up and the second breaks down the area and cleans up. A snack bar coordinator will be present to provide direction, ensure proper handling of food and help collect the money from the cash box.
Set up and Take down assistants/Home meets
*(HT)
Set up
For Home meets you need to
come to the pool at 7:00 pm on Friday and help with set up of the pool.
Also help at 7:00 am to set up tent.
Take Down
For home meets helps
take down tent and clean up pool area. Placing chairs and the tables
back to their original spot. Putting all equipment away.
Clean up after the swim meet. Place items in lost and found, clean up by the swim team tent, remove trash bags,etc.
Stroke Judge
*(RT) Watches the swimmers and determines that the correct strokes are
being used (requires training through the league - it isn’t the Olympics
but we are just trying to keep the meet fair and teach the swimmer)
Timer
*(HT) Times individual and relay events using a stopwatch and records times on the heat card. Stopwatch, pencil and clipboard provided by hosting team. Make sure you wear your hat because you are out in the sun!
**Please note, volunteers that do not fulfill their responsibilities at a meet (do not show up for their job) will be fined $50.00.
